about

A little about me:
Kari Svendsboe
I have been doing internet/website related work for almost a decade now and, amazingly, I still find it to be exciting and a good challenge. I started as a web designer, then went on to work as a webmaster and then a backend web engineer. A few years ago I decided that the best way to get to work on the cool, interesting projects that I was dreaming of was to go freelance, so I brushed up on some skills and bridged some gaps and have been working as a full spectrum web developer ever since. I specialize in flexible, tables free, CSS based, dynamic sites that always pass a W3C validation. I am a firm believer in the separation of markup and design, as well as good code structure, and as a result my projects are SEO by nature and load quickly and easily in the browser of anyone's choosing.

davey jones
Artist Davey Jones needed a new site to better house his portfolio of intricate, crafted photographs. Although we did not want to detract from the art itself with an overly complicated layout, it was crucial that the design lend itself to building the mood created by Jones' images. A complex and detailed yet fairly monochromatic design seemed to suit the work best. The use of jQuery to create the slide navigation adds additional visual interest.

Whitney M. Cole is an innovative personal trainer who recently relocated to LA from DC. She wanted to build up her new LA identity, provide all of her business info cleanly and clearly, and include a blog where she could offer regular health advice to her clients and friends. I used Wordpress to accomplish this, building out a custom theme with graphics provided by Jennifer Otenti. PHP contact forms assure that Whitney gets the info she needs from potential clients.

This 28 page site was a collaborative effort with Dragonbutterfly Designs. All One Yoga's site needed a facelift badly and we gave them one that should keep them looking lovely for years to come! With Rich at DBD handling most of the graphics for this project, I was able to focus on creating a flexible, dynamic site that will be easy to update down the line. Several custom PHP forms allow All One Yoga to easily collect information. A jQuery image rotator on the homepage adds visual interest.

Busy Los Angeles based wardrobe and costume stylist Heather Williams-Baumgart needed a portfolio site that was clean and effectivly conveyed her sense of style. She also wanted to be able to update the images frequently herself. Using the open source photo CMS Zenphoto, I created a custom theme and gallery configuration for Heather that allows her to easily add new images as she completes projects. By reworking the core PHP, I was able to adjust it so that the gallery thumbs and images load in the same page, which was a crucial requirement of the client.

Up and coming makeup artist and hair stylist Tasha Reiko Brown wanted a portfolio site that was simple, classic, and let her work speak for itself. Using the open source photo CMS Zenphoto, I created a custom theme and gallery configuration for Tasha that allows her to easily add new images as she completes projects. By reworking the core PHP, I was able to create a horizontal slide which allows busy potential clients to scroll through large images of her work easily, on any screen size, with her name and contact info statically available on the left hand side. .

Bedlam Magazine is a Downtown LA arts magazine. This was a layout that I designed for them to be used with a CMS such as Wordpress, Joomla or Drupal.
